A MANCHESTER United fan will run a one-man marathon in Worcester before stepping out on to the club's hallowed turf.

Mark Underhill, aged 27, has been chosen to take part in a game at Old Trafford organised by Football Aid, a charity which raises money for research into juvenile diabetes.

But first, he has to raise £750 and has already secured almost £700 in sponsorship through a marathon he will be running at Nunnery Wood sports centre in Spetchley Road, Worcester, at 9am on Saturday.

Mr Underhill will run round the centre's race track 106 times to make up the marathon's 26-mile distance, which he expects will take him about four hours.

The Morganite Crucible worker - who was a soldier for four years and served twice in Bosnia - has been preparing for the challenge by doing runs around the city over the past six weeks.

He said: "I train anyway and I used to be in the Army so I've kept it going since I left. I completed 19 miles the other day so hopefully the last few miles should be possible."

Mr Underhill plays for Bridge FC in the first division of the Worcester And District Sunday league.

His game at Old Trafford is due to take place at the end of the season, at a date to be set.

Anyone interested in sponsoring him can call him on 07984 139657.
