People fed up with their street being used as a rat run are demanding that something is done about the problem.

More than 100 people in Victoria Avenue, Worcester, have signed a petition calling for the street to be made one-way, with a 20mph speed limit.

Resident Alan Smith, who organised the petition, said problems include animals being run over, cars getting stuck and parking problems.

He said the street, off the busy London Road, was used by people trying to avoid the traffic lights.

He said: "We are hoping it will become a one-way street. People park on both sides and if you meet another car, you end up having to reverse for hundreds of yards. They should introduce residents-only parking, a 20mph speed limit or other traffic calming measures.

"There was a collision on Tuesday at about 8.30am and it wasn't cleared from the road until 5.30pm. One of the cars was left jutting out into the road. Luckily, there was enough room for us to carefully drive around them."

He is confident Worcestershire transport chiefs will soon take action after they was handed the petition, signed by 105 neighbours.

He said: "They have agreed to look at the overall problems and our concerns. Then they will report back to our ward councillors as well as MP Mike Foster, who has been really positive and willing to represent us."

Tom Comerford, from Worcestershire County Council's Highways Partnership Unit, visited the area to get a feel for the residents' problems.

He said: "It seems to be a typical residential situation. They are nearing saturation point when it comes to parking, which is a common issue.

"It is difficult to say what we could offer them, as all the options have pros and cons. But the ball is rolling and their concerns are being looked into."
