YOU can part-exchange your car, part-exchange your fridge, even part-exchange your mobile phone, but how about that old loaf getting mouldy at the back of the cupboard?

Fit only for the birds or the mousetrap? Not necessarily so, because a Worcester bakers has launched an offer to part-exchange stale bread for fresh doughnuts.

Foregate Patisserie in The Foregate is offering Trade In Tuesday, when anyone can take in an old loaf, or even part of one, and walk away with four fresh jam doughnuts completely free.

"I got the idea when we were trading in our delivery van for a new one," said Tom Brown, co-owner of the patisserie.

"As I sat there waiting for the new vehicle, I wondered whether we could do something similar in our line of business and came up with Trade In Tuesday. Anyone who brings in a stale loaf or even half of one on a Tuesday can exchange it for four jam doughnuts. They don't need to have bought the loaf from us and the offer is not conditional on being part of another sale. It is a stand alone offer, which I think is pretty unique.

"Of course the idea is to get people through the door, see what we bake and hope they can be tempted to buy something else."

Another Foregate Patisserie marketing first is the Great Student Offer, "which guarantees to save scholars some dollars." This includes bacon and sausage sandwiches for £1, cakes and drinks for 50p each and a reward scheme which makes the 10th purchase free and adds free crisps and free extra portions of fried eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes with group purchases.

"This should help to make the students' money go that little bit further and, with a hearty breakfast inside, enable them to fully focus on their studies," Tom added.
