A CHURCH in Worcester-shire is celebrating after scooping a national award for the way it has reached out to the members of its community.

St James Church, Welland, gained third prize in the contest, organised by Ecclesiastical Insurance, for the best ideas for making a church an important part of the community every day of the week.

It received £500 and a plaque at a presentation by the Rt Rev David Conner, Dean of Windsor, and was commended for its careful consideration of all members of the community and its work with the youth of Welland.

Church warden of St James David Richardson said he believed having a good dialogue with the community is the mainreason for the church's success. He said: "Rather than imposing what we thought the community wanted, we asked them what they thought. We've managed to reach out to many people that would not normally have stepped into the church."

As a result of the church's success it is also featured on the front cover and for the month of March in the ecclesiastical calendar for 2006.
