TOWN centre traders are on the lookout for an organised shoplifting gang that could strike again at the Christmas shopping event tonight (Friday).

Professional thieves have been targeting Malvern stores for the past month in a campaign that began during preparations for the busy festive period.

PC Paul Lambon, of Malvern Police, said shop-lifters had persistently 'worked' stores in the town.

"They are bold and employ a series of techniques to distract staff whilst they carry out their criminal activity," he said.

He called for extra awareness from shoppers and staff in the run-up to Christmas, adding there would be an increased police presence at tonight's Christmas shopping event.

"In the run up to Christmas, Malvern remains vulnerable to their activities and we are asking shoppers and store personnel to be increasingly vigilant," he said. "Particularly vulnerable are the rear entrances to shops and fire exits, even in broad daylight."

Although two suspects have been arrested and released on police bail, inquiries continue.

Many traders are aware of the gang, but cannot always stop them. Stores including Waitrose and Boots have been targeted.

A Waitrose spokesman said: "Waitrose prides itself on providing a safe and pleasant shopping environment for our customers. We are aware of the issues and are working with our security team to resolve them."

Malvern Traders' Association chairman Robin Elt is aware of one persistent shoplifter in his Time Outdoors store and has increased security measures.

"The staff have all got his identity clocked and we won't hesitate to prosecute," he said. "It's a nuisance but unfortunately, that's the way of the world."

Lucy Lessimore, manager of Scarlet Ark in Church Street, is always more vigilant over the Christmas period.

"People need presents but some might not have the money," she said. "You can normally pinpoint the culprit just from the way they've behaved."

The gang previously operated in Worcester and police have suspects in mind.

PC Lambon reassured traders and shoppers that measures were in place to catch the thieves.

"The town's CCTV system has been used to great effect and through coupling that to the 'Shop Watch' radio link and the diligence of storekeepers, the thieves have been deterred on a number of occasions," he said.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity in a Malvern shop is asked to contact police on 08457 444888.
