Bromyard is all set for the sparkling switch-on of the town's Christmas lights.

The event takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 5.30pm and will be accompanied by a whole host of activities.

A band, carols, mince pies and a Santa's grotto will bring a festive feel to the streets throughout the day.

"It's more than just the Christmas lights. The whole community is working together. There's a lot going on," said Jonathan Lester, chairman of Bromyard Chamber of Commerce.

There will be mulled wine and mince pies at the Bromyard and District Local History Society Christmas fair at the Local History Centre, in Sherford Street, at 2pm.

A Christmas craft fair takes place in the Bromyard Centre from 10am to 4pm, with 50 stalls. Proceeds from this event will go towards the Christmas lights, which are provided by Bromyard Chamber of Commerce through donations and grants.

St Michael's Hospice will host a Christmas fair in the ballroom at The Falcon Hotel, from 10am to 4pm. The hotel will also be selling hot dogs and burgers and providing games and entertainment.

Santa will welcome children to his wooden chalet-style grotto in The Square from 2pm onwards, with the Bromyard Wind Band and Bromyard Choral Society performing popular carols from 4.30pm.

The winners of the Christmas shop window competition will be announced after the lights are switched on from the balcony in The Square at 5.30pm.

The ceremony will be performed by Bromyard town crier Peter Dauncey.
