KIDDERMINSTER went snooker loopy as four of the world's top players potted the reds and screwed back for the yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black in a prestigious tournament at the Glades Arena.

Former world champions Ronnie O'Sullivan and Steve Davis and rising stars Steven Maguire and Ding Jun-hui took to the table for the latest installment of the Betfred Premier Snooker League.

The competition was making its second visit to Kidderminster following its sell-out success earlier in the year.

And although the tickets were not snapped up quite as quickly this time around, nearly all the 800 seats had been sold by the time the action started last Thursday evening.

Former seven times world champion Steve Davis, dubbed Mr Interesting during his ultra-serious approach to the game in his 1980s heyday, was in good form as he battled to a 4-2 victory over Scottish player Maguire.

Although the first six-frame match was a bit hard-going with both players struggling to find any rhythm, the second clash between world number one O'Sullivan and Asia's hottest snooker talent Jun-hui was an exciting edge-of-the seat encounter.

In fact so close was their match that O'Sullivan had to brilliantly cut in a re-spotted black to earn a 3-3 draw after the sixth and final frame ended in a draw.

Among the audience for one of the biggest snooker night's in the town's history was Ryder Cup golfer Ian Poulter, who is a close friend of O'Sullivan.

Luke Riches, spokesman for tournament promoters Matchroom, said the event at the Glades Arena had been an overwhelming success.

"It's proving to be a great venue for the Betfred Premier Snooker League and once again it went very well and everybody enjoyed themselves," he said.

The night's action was beamed around the world by Sky TV.
