WHAT eventually proved to be a comprehensive 3-1 Worcestershire Senior Cup defeat to a watered down Worcester City side sealed a disappointing week for Stourport Swifts.
A point from Saturday's 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Beaconsfield was not enough to keep manager Ray Rencher happy after watching his side squander enough chances to leave them five, not seven points adrift of safety this week.
And Tuesday's defeat to a Worcester side, who play two divisions higher, eventually proved a one-sided affair despite a confident start from Swifts.
Stourport kept keeper Lewis Skyers on his toes in the seventh minute when Shaun Findlay picked out Adam Hughes' for a stooping header at the near post.
Former Manchester United starlet George Clegg showed his Old Trafford pedigree with two quality finishes either side of Rory May's equaliser, a towering far post header to convert Adam Robinson's 63rd minute corner.
Home keeper Aaron O'Malley was at fault for Clegg's 24th minute opener, scuffing his clearance and watching as the midfielder lobbed it into the gaping net from nearly 40 yards.
And Clegg again kept his cool in the 70th minute to restore Worcester's lead with a lob after ghosting behind a sleeping Craig Webb.
Stourport could do little to stem the tide and the game was over as a contest in the 73rd minute when the pint-sized Troy Wood leapt in the six-yard box to head home player-manager Andy Preece's pinpoint cross from the right.
It was a far cry from the weekend when May cancelled out Jason Griffiths' opener for Beaconsfield and the visitors went on to dominate with Richard Burgess snatching at three chances late on and May also guilty of profligacy.
But Rencher's troops were unable to find the breakthrough their dominance deserved on a frustrating outing.
