CLEOBURY Mortimer warmed up for Saturday's big Powergen Junior Vase clash with West Bridgford with a confidence-boosting 29-5 victory in their re-arranged clash with Harbury in Midlands Four West South.
Having survived three missed penalties from the Harbury kicker early on, the Mortimer men rallied around to take control of the game and were 22-0 ahead at the break.
Allan Shields kicked them into the lead from a penalty and extended the advantage himself by touching down after chasing his own forward chip, although he failed with the conversion.
A penalty try added to Cleobury's tally when the Harbury full back took the ball over his own line and Shields had no trouble adding the extras.
Another converted try completed the first half scoring when Colin Todd hung onto the ball as the maul collapsed over the line and Shields' kick again found its target.
Shortly after the interval a flying score from right winger James Manley and another Shields conversion put the Love Lane men further in front and although Harbury grabbed a late consolation try, Cleobury's 29-5 success was never in doubt. Cleobury are now sixth.
Spokesman Dave Hinves said the club was gripped by Cup fever ahead of Saturday's clash with West Bridgford at Love Lane. This season they have progressed to their furthest ever point in the Powergen Junior Vase, the fourth round.
"Most importantly there are no injuries ahead of the important cup game at home to West Bridgford when we are told the BBC cameras will be in attendance," said Hinves.
West Bridgford play in a comparable division, Midlands Four East North, and operate three senior sides and a Vets XV as well as a thriving junior section.
