A TRIO of Pershore-based police officers have won recognition for their efforts - including an officer who followed a hunch to track down a suspect after a chip shop stabbing.

PC Marc Edwards was near the Sea Crest Fish Bar in London Road, Worcester, at the time of an attempted robbery which resulted in a member of the public being stabbed.

PC Edwards rushed to the chippy before local officers on the night of July 13, protected the crime scene and started enquiries.

Dennis Richards had been eliminated as a suspect despite his description matching that of the offender but PC Edwards felt otherwise and made further enquiries.

Richards subsequently admitted attempted burglary, having an offensive weapon and wounding with intent, and is awaiting sentence at Worcester Crown Court.

PC Edwards' efforts earned a divisional commendation at Worcester's Castle Street police station.

Chief Superintendent Simon Adams, Commander of South Worcestershire Division of West Mercia Constabulary, presented the awards and recognised two other Pershore comrades.

Inspector Phil Worthington was honoured for his role in helping the families of victims of the Tsunami.

Insp Worthington managed the deployment of Family Liaison Officers working with West Mercia families, reviewed case-loads, ensured staff welfare, arranged logistical support and attended regional meetings on top of his normal role in the South Worcestershire Operational Response Unit in Pershore.

And Pershore Community Support Officer Gary Shepheard was commended for his efforts in the town, which included work to investigate and combat anti-social behaviour and drug-taking.
