A GROUP of Redditch fencers have booked their place at the British Youth Fencing Championships.

Five members of the Redditch Youth Fencing Club eased their way through the West Midlands qualifiers that were held at St Thomas Aquinus School, Kings Norton.

The championships are separated into boys and girls age groups of u12s, u14s, u16s and u18s and the club had representatives across most of these.

Daniel Wilson won the silver medal in the u18s boys, losing to Matthew Rowland by a narrow margin. His displays not only saw him qualify for the National Finals but also secured a place in the West Midlands teams to contest the Cadet Winton Cup, held at Millfield School, Somerset, next month.

Shelby Sands won the silver medal in the u16s Girls losing narrowly in the final and also qualified for the Cadet Winton.

There was another silver medal when Anita Mason was runner-up in u14s Girls, losing out to the England u16 champion.

Louis Chung won the bronze medal in the u16 boys, defeating his brother Andrew on his passage through the competition, and Vicky Lacey won bronze in the u12 girls, an excellent result for an inexperienced competitor and will only improve in the future.

The five now head to the Nationals in Sheffield next year.

Anyone interested in finding out more about fencing should get along to Redditch Youth House between 10am and noon on Saturdays when the club holds their weekly sessions.
