TAMIKA Mkandawire headed an extra-time winner to give Hereford United a 2-1 success over League One Port Vale in the LDV Vans Trophy second round at Edgar Street last night.
Hereford had much the better of the early play and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 12th minute.
Jon Brady's free-kick from 25 yards was going well wide until it got a deflection and the ball landed at the feet of Danny Carey-Bertram. The England non-league international had no problem beating Jonathan Brain in the Port Vale goal.
But rather than pressing home their advantage, Hereford found themselves pegged back by a lively Vale side sparked by the midfield efforts of Chris Cornes.
Headed
The League One side fired in a number of shots before they drew level in first-half injury time. Cornes crossed for Jeff Smith to head the ball home.
After the interval much of the play was confined to midfield. The best opening fell to Vale's Nathan Lowndes who managed to flick Cornes' corner over the bar from four yards out.
It was no surprise the score remained level at the end of 90 minutes, but 12 minutes into extra-time the Bulls regained the lead when Mkandawire was on the spot to make it 2-1.
