A YOUNG tenpin bowler achieved a personal best on her way to a gold medal at the Irish Junior Open in Dublin.

Nunnery Wood High School pupil Sarah Clements secured a personal record by scoring 662 from three games which helped her to a 20-pin lead.

The St Peter's teenager then came out on top after bowling a further three games followed by a four-player round-robin the following day.

Clements, now in the under 19s category after turning 16 earlier this month, bagged 190 euros for winning her gold and securing the best score in her division of 264.

However, the excellent result did not count towards her efforts to making the England squad for the triple crown cup as she entered the competition as an individual.

But the Worcester Ten Pin Bowling Club player, who turns out for Worcester Wizards Youth, did earn points from three other competitions and is on course to be among the top 20 English bowlers invited to trials next year.

Clements finished 12th in events at Norwich and Sunderland but must now wait for her results from a Wolverhampton contest.

She has been receiving physio for a knee problem which seems to have improved but it prevented her qualifying for the junior England squad that heads to Denmark at Easter.
