DROITWICH Spa's elderly residents are being warned by the town's Age Concern organisation about the dangers of cold weather during the winter months.
With forecasters predicting one of the coldest winters on record, the elderly are being told to keep warm and are urged to be on guard for signs of hypothermia and other problems.
Carole Smallwood, the information officer for Age Concern Droitwich Spa and District, said: "In winter, older people need to take extra care. Cold weather can present a real danger, because as a person gets older, it becomes harder to keep the body warm.
"There is an increased risk of hypothermia, which is when the functions of the body close down because a person gets too cold."
Residents are being advised to have a least one hot meal a day and to drink hot drinks regularly, keep moving, wrap up warm whenever going outside and to always dress warmly for bed. It is also important to remember that several layers of thinner clothing keeps you warmer than one thick layer.
As well as elderly residents who are being urged to be aware of the winter dangers, other townsfolk are also being asked to make a contribution by Age Concern. People are asked to think about older relatives and neighbours who may need their help.
"If you have an older neighbour or relative, look out for them during the winter months. It may be possible for you to get a few groceries for them when you go to the shops, or to simply knock on their door and make sure that they have not fallen ill," said Carole.
"Many older people become isolated in bad weather and may not be looking after themselves properly.
"A friendly neighbour who is concerned for their welfare can make a big difference."
Age Concern Droitwich Spa and District will also be handing out copies of the NHS guide 'Keep Warm, Keep Well' to vulnerable townsfolk.
The booklet contains information about clothing, food, energy efficiency advice, help with heating bills and illness and hypothermia.
It also includes a list of useful telephone numbers.
Anyone wanting a leaflet or further advice and information can call Age Concern Droitwich Spa and District between 9am and 1pm on 01905 795571.
