SIR - Your story on the Elton John concert next June makes the large assumption that every fan will be driving to the big event, and that the city has a responsibility to find them all parking spaces.

Worcester Green Party would start from another perspective. The 20,000 fans are going to come anyway, parking or not - they are not going to miss this chance to see Elton. We are proud of the council's recent attempts to reduce car use and congestion in the city, through the Worcester Express project.

So why encourage all these people to come and clog up our city and spoil it? Why not make it clear that no extra car parking spaces will be provided in the city, but that extra bus parking will be? Putting on a free shuttle bus service from the railway station for the day will encourage people to use the railways. And although the Green Party has reservations about park-and-ride, extra provision on the outskirts and extra buses for the day would help.

Road traffic accounts for 25 per cent of CO2 emissions, and massively adds to the pollution and climate change that is devastating the environment and the world economy. A short-sighted policy of catering for more car use will only encourage people to continue to use cars more and add to the problem. Surely Worcester City Council and Worcestershire Cricket Club are a little more far-sighted and inventive than this?
