SIR - D E Margrett says that our electoral system is rotten. It takes more than twice as many votes to elect a pro-European as it does to elect a Europe-hater. Doubtless dim, I have a problem in following this. Maybe he would be kind enough to explain. His other comments shed no light.

For general elections - and I take it that he's talking about these - we have here a voting system of first-past-the-post. Numbers of people complain about it, although not me, but this is the first time I have heard it alleged that the fellow who gets the most votes is, in fact, not first past the post. Is he sure about this?

If so he should vigorously complain to the Electoral Commission. In fact we all should.

I think that he must have got it mixed up, but in any case it doesn't seem to make any difference what views they or we have. Our parliamentarians are still eager to have us at the heart of Brussels.no matter what the rest of us want.
