TENBURY Swimming Club, which has been teaching the town's youngsters for the past 34 years, is threatened with closure due to a lack of qualified swimming instructors.

Anne Baker, its chairman, said: "We have a number of members of staff retiring, including myself, and unless we can get replacements the club could close.

"It would be dreadful if that was to happen and I feel strongly that it should continue. Not only does the club teach children to swim they also form strong friendships."

The club, which has 55 members, requires level two swimming teachers, who have been accredited by the Amateur Swimming Association.

"We need level two teachers as those qualified to level one cannot take a class without their supervision," Anne said. "The problem is that to qualify as a level two instructor you need to make a significant time and financial commitment."

Closure of the club would deprive town youngsters of the opportunity to learn life saving and personal survival skills.

"We run rookie life saving courses prior to the summer holidays so it is fresh in the minds of members and we also teach them how to survive if they should go over board."

Anne added that anyone who came forward would find the experience satisfying.

"Children like to swim and they like to get better. It is very rewarding to see the youngsters develop, especially when you see them do something that they thought they could not.

"A lot of progress has been made within the past three years and I want to pass it on to someone who can take the club forward," she said.

Volunteers are welcome to attend the club's EGM on Wednesday, November 23, at 8pm at the Pump Rooms. Further details can also be obtained from Anne on 01584 811248.
