JOHN Trewick insists hot-shot Andy Williams is in 'pole position' to lead the line for Hereford United tomorrow.
The Hereford-born striker made his first full Conference start for the Bulls against Woking last Saturday.
And Williams made a terrific impression, netting the opener in a 4-0 rout with Rob Purdie and Guy Ipoua also finding the target.
A bright future lies in store for the talented 20-year-old, but he will face stiff competition from last season's leading goalscorer, Adam Stansfield, who is close to a comeback following three months on the sidelines.
Danny Carey-Bertram, who netted on his England National Game XI debut in mid-week, is also contesting one of the two striker spots, along with Graham Evans.
Coach Trewick believes the ball is in Williams' court ahead of United's trip to Dagenham and Redbridge.
"Andy Williams is in the team and I'm delighted for him," said Trewick. "He's worked tremendously hard and pushed himself forward.
"He was selected last Saturday with Guy Ipoua. Both played well, both scored a goal each and they caused Woking's defence all sorts of problems. It was great to see.
"He is now in pole position. It's up to him to continue to work hard to keep other players out of the side.
"Andy has a lot of enthusiasm for the game. He's got a good touch and technically he's a very good player. He can produce a finish and, last year, got his fair share of goals in the reserves.
"He's had a lot of support from the fans and quite rightly so. That's fantastic. I think the supporters like a local lad coming through into the team."
United will look to improve on a chequered record at Victoria Road.
They stunned Sky TV viewers with an astonishing 9-0 win at Dagenham two seasons ago, but their record in East London is not the best, having lost four of their last five visits.
Trewick added: "If we perform the way we did last Saturday, we will all be happy. What we are looking for is that consistency.
"We will not be underestimating Dagenham. A lot of things change in the space of a few years. Everybody knows what happened a couple of years ago, but the game changes and moves on quickly."
Stansfield and Simon Travis came through a reserve game at Cheltenham, but their fitness levels need improving and both are unlikely to figure.
