RIVALRY in love between two poets is the subject of Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience, being staged by the Bosbury Players.

It is less well-known than some of the Savoy operas but is described as one of their best by director Robert Lane.

"It's a wonderfully witty script and the songs, of course, are marvellous," he said.

Patience tells the story of two poets, Bunthorne and Grosvenor (Alan Soper and Ian Gifford), who compete for the affection of Patience (Elaine Fleming).

Ladies Angela, Saphir, Ella and Jane are played by Linda Sinker, Carolyn Houlbrooke, Liz Knowles and Margaret Edgar while Mike Stokes, Robin Peers and John Sabey play the officers of the guard. The supporting cast includes love-struck maidens, dragoon guards and young players.

Patience was written as a satire on the aesthetic movement and gently pokes fun at the Pre-Raphaelites and characters like Oscar Wilde.

"You don't need to know anything about the aesthetic movement to enjoy the humour and great music," said Mr Lane. "It's brilliant fun and deserves to be better known."

The production is Mr Lane's first as a director with the Bosbury Players and he said he was really enjoying it.

The Bosbury Players usually alternate productions of Gilbert and Sullivan with more serious plays.

"People love Gilbert and Sullivan so we're expecting a good turnout," said Mr Lane.

Patience is at Bosbury Village Hall for four nights, November 30 to December 3 with performances at 7.30pm. Tickets are £6 adults and £4 under 16s, available from the Bell Inn in Bosbury, Bosbury Post Office and Shop or on 01531 640234.
