BEWDLEY Town were baffled at not beating Bromyard in West Midlands League Premier Division after a disallowed goal and a missed penalty forced them to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Boss Craig Payton named the same side that put seven past Smethwick the previous week, but his players forgot to pack their scoring boots

"What did we have to do to win?" he said."Everything went against us and it was so frustrating."

Bewdley feared it was going to be one of those days when Chris Hough's early long range shot beat the keeper but canoned back of the crossbar.

They thought they had made the breakthrough on 21 minutes, when Jamie Hart raced onto a long goal-kick to beat defender Matt Gray and score but the "goal" was ruled out for a push.

Bewdley, who had seen Hart volley over an earlier chance, were denied again when James Cronin had a shot scrambled off the line from a corner.

After creating most of the chances in the first half, Bewdley were forced to defend just after the break when keeper Steve Thomas made a spectacular save to thwart Mark Russell.

But Bromyard were persistent and eventually took the lead on 71 minutes with Andy Crowther blasting home after Kieren Powis nutmegged Jan Mulders.

The lead only lasted four minutes though as another Thomas goalkick was flicked on by Hart and Lewis Pountney burst through to equalise.

Five minutes from time, Bewdley spurned a great chance to clinch all three points when Gary Middleton's penalty struck the bar after a Bromyard handball.

l Bewdley Reserves continued their recent good run in West Midlands League Division Two with a 2-1 win over Brereton.

Rich Downey's men opened the scoring on 15 minutes when promising young forward John Griffin beat the offside trap and drilled the ball past the advancing keeper.

The second goal came five minutes before the break when Matt Payne scored at the second attempt after his saved shot rebounded back. Bewdley defended well in the first half with Sam Mason in fine form, but Brereton hit back with a super goal on 65 minutes.

And the home side had a double let off moments later when Brereton failed to find the target from a twice-taken penalty. Bewdley keeper Aaron O'Malley saved the first spot kick and was relieved to see the second roll wide.
