FORMER colleagues and family members have paid tribute to a retired teacher and former Droitwich school governor after his unexpected death.
Peter Cook, from Shire Way, Droitwich, died at home on Tuesday, November 4 aged 62 after suffering a heart attack.
After teaching since 1972, including a spell in Worcester from 1983, Mr Cook retired in 1993 due to ill health.
However, retirement for Peter was not a 'sit back and watch time'. After some supply work he was appointed as the governor of Droitwich Spa High School, Briar Mill, and Witton Middle School, Old Coach Road.
His expertise and skill led to his appointment as chair of governors at Witton Middle School in 2002.
Following his sudden death former colleagues and family members have paid tribute to a 'valued friend' and 'tower of strength'.
His wife Julia said: "We have always been very close and have got three children together. We did everything together and that's why I really miss him.
"He was always cheerful and a lovely man that was a great support to everyone, not just his family."
Headteacher at Witton Middle School, David Coll, said: "A huge void has been left because of his expert knowledge of the education system." He also described Peter as having been a 'tower of strength and having made a huge contribution to the school'.
As well as his work as a teacher and governor another contribution was his membership and involvement in the National Union of Teachers (NUT).
Tessa Bidgood, chairman of the Worcestershire division of the NUT, said: "Peter's interest of the membership was paramount. He was always keen to encourage younger members of the profession to become involved."
Pupils at Droitwich Spa High School were given the news on Friday, November 11 when the school issued a tribute letter to parents.
Peter leaves behind his wife Julia and three grown up children.
