BROMSGROVE Blaze proved they can compete at the highest level by beating Ilkeston Outlaws 82-77 in the National Basketball League in Derbyshire.

Blaze proved they're a match for most sides in the division by holding on for a narrow victory.

The home side opened the scoring but Dave Usherwood, Lea Pankhurst and Andy Barker were on target to make sure Bromsgrove trailed by just nine points at the end of the first quarter.

Barker and Pankhurst kept up Blaze's scoring, but an Ilkeston three point shot kept the hosts ahead at half time.

Bromsgrove turned up the heat in the third quarter, with Luke Coffey leading the line. Dan Knight and Alex Lockwood also got in on the scoring as Blaze took a 64-61 lead going into the final period.

With Callum Bolsher in fine form in defence Bromsgrove could go forward.

With 80 seconds left the sides were tied, but two late free shots made sure Bromsgrove blazed a trail to victory.
