THE first-ever radio station specifically for young people in Worcester is to be set up after its application was approved by Ofcom, the Government's communication watchdog.
Youth Community Media, in partnership with Youthcomm, Worcestershire Youth Service Youthworcs, Worcester College Of Technology, Worcester University and other organisations, will launch the FM radio station in the new year.
Radio co-ordinator Chris Fox said: "It's been a nail-biting wait after submitting our application to Ofcom last year.
"Everyone is really excited and now we can't wait to fire up our transmitters and start broadcasting.
"For the first time ever, Worcester will have a brand-new radio station exclusively by and for young people. It's an exciting prospect for the whole of the community to get involved and really be part of it."
He added that the station would be all-inclusive and encourage young people, regardless of gender, ability or experience, to get involved.
There will be regular free radio training courses on offer that are fully accredited, and a number of positions available for volunteers including presenter, producer and journalist as well as the opportunity for career development and decision-making as a member of the radio committee.
The service will broadcast a mix of music across the pop, rock, dance and black music spectrum.
There will also be on-air debates, phone-ins, interviews, general and specialist news bulletins, sketches and drama.
Mr Fox added: "It's a completely new type of radio station - one with the community at the centre. We're now developing plans and strategies to ensure that we can involve as many young people as possible, as well as organisations, agencies, and individuals who support them."
