STOURPORT Boat Club have set their sights on qualifying for the Henley Regatta after the most successful year in their history.

The club celebrated a record number of 150 wins, with 140 of them coming from the hugely-talented junior section.

Stourport clinched gold at the prestigious National Schools Regatta, beating off a host of public schools with a fine rowing pedigree.

They also picked up three gold medals, one silver and a bronze at the National Championships.

Call-ups for two of the junior boys to represent Great Britain at the World Junior Championships added to a wondeful year of achievement for the club.

The junior section, which boasts rowers aged from 11 to 18 is a credit to junior coach Fred Caswill who has overseen success in all of the age-groups.

The success story shows no signs of letting up with 20 junior and 12 senior wins just two months into the racing year, which runs from September to September.

Club captain Stewart Barnett insists the club are continuing to aim big, saying: "As well as our junior squad we have big ambitions for our senior section next year.

"Our goal is to qualify for the rowing Mecca, Henley Royal Regatta, and training is going very well.

"We currently have about 25 men aiming to make the first eight and trials will begin in December.

"We also have a strong women's section who all aim to compete on the regatta circuit come the summer."

Stourport currently operate with an ageing fleet and are looking for a sponsor to help fund a new boat.
