THEATRE and film producer Kim Davies is on call 24 hours a day and will do absolutely anything to bring a project to fruition - including stripping naked!
Kim's unorthodox approach came after an actress suffered from a bout of shyness and refused to do a nude scene. So Kim showed her how easy it was by stripping off in front of the whole crew.
"She'd already signed the contract, agreeing to do this scene but when it came to filming she refused to do it. The actress took her clothes off in the end but I was rather annoyed that after agreeing to do it she changed her mind.
"It was afterwards that I thought - blimey, did I do that?"
Kim and her husband Lynn, a writer, director and actor, set up Kayelle, a theatre and media production company, two years ago. She believes the organisational skills developed as a housekeeper in the Vale and Cotswolds are what help her to bring creative ideas into existence. Kim managed estates for foreign clients who had homes locally and made sure all household tasks were completed.
"I'm passionate about what I do. I've had no training for this role and have hit the ground running but this is what I love, bringing something creative into a reality, into existence," said Kim.
"I left housekeeping after 20 years but the skills I gained I brought to this job. I run Kayelle, our company, with my husband, Lynn. We work together bringing his creative ideas into existence and that's the best thing about this job. I'm responsible for bringing performances together."
Kim spends her days buying props for films, shows and theatre productions, organises catering, and liaises with actors. In August the company toured the Vale with Rites, a double bill based on two Greek comedies.
"We worked with fantastic actors and played to huge audiences in Bretforton, the Lenches and Hampton Ferry. I remember watching the play at the end of the night and thinking this is great, I've done this. I remember sitting back and feeling immensely proud."
Kim, who has an 11-year-old daughter, thrives on taking risks. "There's no certainty in this game, one minute everything looks like it's coming together and the next minute it can all go horribly wrong and you just want to cry.
"You have to remain professional at all times."
In spite of the uncertainties, Kim speaks enthusiastically about her role as a producer and gives the impression of an inspirational woman who thrives on taking risks in the aid of creativity.
Kayelle are now working on Mompesson's Well, a new comedy-drama with themes of memory and identity, dreams and reality. It will tour throughout eight counties beginning in November, including a performance at Evesham Arts Centre on Thursday, November 24.
