THIS is a 'follow up' comment on the letter published on October 26 (A Matter of Duty).
Born in 1921, but now aged 84, in a country known as England, United Kingdom, then part of the mighty British Empire. Born and bred English? Other empires have come and gone. As has ours.
How then is it that I am not allowed to use the titles English or England? I have been handed forms asking me to state country of origin. Every nationality under the sun, but not England. British?
I believe two thirds of the Middle and Far East claim that title.
Members of my family visit Australia. Entry form: English deleted. British inserted.
I seem to recall a famous lady in our years of peril 1939-45 singing 'There will always be an England.' Is it farewell to England and the British Empire as I knew it? Or is the word English distasteful?
