BROMSGROVE drivers are being urged to prepare for bad winter weather.

North Worcestershire police traffic management officer Julian Turner says the British winter weather is unpredictable and that bad weather can strike suddenly.

Drivers need to keep their vehicles well maintained and serviced, he says, by keeping batteries fully charged, making sure wipers and lights are in good working order and checking that tyres have plenty of tread depth and are maintained at the correct pressure.

They should add anti-freeze to the radiator and winter additive to the windscreen washer bottle.

Drivers are also being urged to check forecasts in advance and listen to the radio on the journey for up to date travel information.

They should tell someone at their destination what time they expect to arrive and be equipped with warm clothes, food, boots and a torch, plus a spade in snowy conditions, in case they get stranded.

Motorists need to adjust their driving to the conditions as rain reduces visibility. They should use dipped headlights, reduce speed and allow extra time to slow down.

Drivers are also being warned not to cross flooded roads if the water seems too deep and to test their brakes on the other side.

They should keep a safe distance behind gritters and snow ploughs and not overtake them. A pair of sunglasses should also be kept handy as the low winter sun can be dazzling.

PC Turner added: "Winter driving can be a challenge, but a few simple precautions can improve safety not only for the driver, but for other road users."
