RESIDENTS in Southcrest, Winyates, Church Hill and Matchborough are being encouraged to abandon the "it will never happen to me" philosophy and let firefighters give their homes a free safety check.
Fire station manager Ian Prust said these were heavily populated areas where there were often fires which could easily be prevented.
"We fit free smoke alarms if residents don't have them, look for means of escape should a fire take place, ask about their night time practices before bed and discuss general home safety. These checks save lives and prevent accidents," he said.
"We think the reason people in these areas are not taking up the offer is because they think it will never happen to them. We're not saying it will but in the event of a fire, wouldn't they be happier knowing they and their families would be safe?"
For a free check, call the station on 62223 or freephone 0800 0321155.
