WORCESTER'S council leader has swapped the council chamber for overalls as the city's people and bin men become accustomed to the new wheelie bins.

Simon Geraghty joined refuse collector Andy Johnson for the launch last week.

The wheelie bin service has been introduced to the city in a bid to boost recycling levels although the council is keen to stress there are other benefits.

It says the bins are cleaner and safer than the bags they are replacing.

Coun Geraghty, who was joined by the council's deputy leader Stephen Inman, said: "Everyone at the council is confident that once the new system is up and running we will quickly win over any remaining sceptics. But it's important that we listen and learn from everyone involved if we are to reach the national target of 24 per cent of household refuse being recycled."

The bins are being rolled out over the next two-and-a-half years to ensure a smooth transition from bags to bins.
