A NEW bar and restaurant in Malvern town centre will be a major boost to the town's night-time economy.
The new venue, Prior's Croft, at Grange Road, opposite Malvern Theatres, is the result of three years' work by developer Jonathan Roe.
Although it is not yet open, anyone interested in seeing what he has accomplished is invited to open days on Sunday and Monday (November 6 and 7).
Mr Roe's efforts have been welcomed by Lee Robson, head of community and economic development at Malvern Hills District Council.
"This will enhance the evening economy of Great Malvern and will improve the town for residents and visitors alike," he said.
"We wish Mr Roe all the very best. He's invested a lot of money in this high-quality venue for the town centre and it's just the sort of thing we like to encourage."
Mr Roe will be running the business himself, despite offers from high- profile pub and restaurant groups to take over the premises, formerly a solicitor's office.
"Why sell it when it's something I've always wanted to do?" he said. "I want to have a bit of fun with it."
The refurbished building includes a restaurant, bar and kitchens downstairs, with a function room for conferences, weddings and parties upstairs.
Previously painted red, Priors Croft is now a tasteful cream and Mr Roe said he was sure local residents were relieved.
Katherine Barber, of Malvern Civic Society, which Mr Roe consulted over the building's final colour, said: "We're delighted this venue has been renovated and we wish him every success."
The business will also provide around 30 new jobs, including management, chefs, waiting and bar staff.
"Without good staff it's not going to be a good restaurant and bar and isn't going to be good for Malvern," said Mr Roe.
The bar will serve a variety of draught lagers and Mr Roe plans to serve food, which is "not pub grub but not fully blown restaurant food."
When the restaurant opens Mr Roe hopes both local residents and stars from Malvern Theatres will eat there. He does not yet have an opening date, but will have a better idea once he has recruited staff.
