BBC Natural History presenter Professor Aubrey Manning is receiving an honorary degree from the University of Worcester in recognition of his work to preserve and promote the geology of the Midlands.
The professor of natural histor, has been focusing his work on conservation issues, which include his work as the president of the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark.
Professor Manning has worked tirelessly with the University's Geopark and Earth Heritage Trust teams
to raise the profile of this worldwide site of geological importance.
The area was designated in 2004 and stretches 1,250 square kilometres across the four counties of Hereford-shire, Gloucestershire, Shrop-shire and Worcestershire. The Geopark is one of only 30 similar areas worldwide and contains 13 sites of special scientific interest and 100 regionally important geological sites. It is one of only three similar areas in the UK - the others being the North Pennines and Marble Arch Caves in County Fermanagh.
Current initiatives promoting Geotourism in the park's boundaries include a £123,000 project to transforming a disused quarry near Malvern into a long-term learning centre for children, and a vast array of geological trail guides taking people through 700 million years of history.
University of Worcester
vice chancellor Professor David Green said he was "delighted to honour one of the country's leading natural scientists".
"The Earth Heritage and Geopark teams initiate a vast range of excellent educational, practical and scientific work across the region and the work of Professor Manning has helped to raise the profile of their outstanding and imaginative projects.
"The partnership will no doubt inspire future generations to investigate our rich natural nistory.
Comedian's charity work is rewarded
COMEDIAN Jasper Carrott is being recognised for his wide range of charity work, especially in his role as patron of Sunfield School.
Sunfield, a specialist residential school in Clent, near Stourport, provides education for children between the ages of six to 19 with severe and complex learning needs.
Carrott, who received an OBE for his outstanding contribution to charity in 2003, has played an active role in Sunfield's promotion and fund-raising activities. The University of Worcester enjoys a close partnership with Sunfield, which includes helping to develop and deliver Continuing Professional Dev-elopment Courses for its staff.
Jenny's goal is a job in soccer
A Worcester graduate has the football world at her fingertips with her statistical analysis of top-flight competitions.
Jenny Burchill has been scrutinising the England football squad, elite teams of Europe and FA Cup matches. Working for UEFA and the BBC, the sports science student has been logging football statistics to judge performance. The 22-year-old's recent coverage, which is then used by commentary teams for their match analysis, includes England's loss to Northern Ireland, and Liverpool's 3-0 win against Anderlecht. For her PhD she is also working with Birmingham City Football's U16 squad to analyse and provide feedback on player performances. Her ambition is to become a statistical analyst for a top club.
Howzat! Daryl's cricket dreams are coming true
Sports studies graduate Daryl Mitchell netted a University of Worcester cricket scholarship, and with it secured his dream to play First Class cricket for Worcestershire.
The 21-year-old from Badsey broke into Worcestershire's first team this season and impressed with both bat and ball in the Twenty20 cup and Championship competitions.
Daryl, who graduated this summer, is the first student to represent the first team through the scholarship - pioneered between the University of Worcester and WCCC. He believes it played a big part in his ambition to play top-level cricket.
"The scholarship was definitely my stepping-stone into the Worcestershire first team, because I knew that, at 18, I wasn't quite ready to take the step up," he said.
"It has allowed me to continue my studies and to train and play with Worcestershire to develop my skills over the past three years.
"Playing cricket for Worcestershire has been a massive high and beating Warwickshire by one run in the Twenty20 Cup in front of 19,000 fans was one of my highlights of the season."
Daryl has secured a first team contract and is now playing in Perth, Australia, during the close- season. He has his sights set this year on a regular first team position, and to eventually play cricket for England.
