A CHIPPING Campden farming family took the first two places in a competition for potatoes.
W R Haines (Leasow Farms) Ltd, of Castle Farm, Station Road, Campden, was placed first and second in the white ware potatoes class in the farms and crops competitions organised by Moreton-in-Marsh and District Agricultural and Horse Show Society.
"We grow about 35 acres of potatoes now, not quite so many as we used to," said William Haines. "Potato growing is getting more a specialist job, as is the case with most sections of farming nowadays."
The entries were judged by Richard Smith, of Stratford NFU, who placed D Drinkwater & Partners, The Washbrook, Ebrington, third.
The fodder crops competitions were judged by James Barber, of Coppington Farm, Charlecote. The best fodder crop resulted: 1 Captain W L Hanney (farm manager Ros Allen), Springhill, Moreton, 2 A. D. Brain & Son, Peter's Farm, Broadway, 3 R & J Baldwyn, High Crest, Hidcote Boyce.
Best catch crop of stubble turnips: 1 A D Brain & Son, 2 R and J Baldwyn, 3 M Righton, New Farm, Dorn, Moreton.
