RUGBY players and teams across Worcestershire are mourning the death of an "inspirational" coach, who died earlier this week at the age of just 42.

Mark Edwards was well known by rugby enthusiasts in Worcestershire after spending years as a junior and women's team coach in Worcester, Droitwich and Malvern, as well as for teams in the north Midlands.

The scrum half was rushed to hospital after collapsing during a veterans' match at Droitwich Ruby Football Club's Memorial Ground on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed he suffered a heart attack during the game and he died at Worcestershire Royal Hosp-ital on Monday evening. Mr Edwards leaves a partner, Julie and four children.

Phil Hopkins, honorary secretary of Droitwich RFC, said: "Mark was an inspiration to young players joining the game.

"Many of the senior squad players at Droitwich also had the benefit of his knowledge and passion for rugby. Although coaching was his focus in recent times, Mark continued to play senior rugby and many second and third team players experienced his enthusiasm for the game first hand."

Mr Edwards was actively involved with sport at the University of Worcester and latterly coached ladies' rugby at Malvern.

Rob Bray, chairman of Droitwich RFC, said: "His knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment will be sadly missed. He was a thoroughly nice guy and one who was prepared to help anyone both on and off the pitch.

"The legacy he has left many clubs will remain with us on our pitches for years to come."

Melanie Dawson, of Malvern Angels, said: "Mark had a zest for life and a love of rugby that was contagious. His commitment was awesome." and in the last nine months, the ladies' numbers have increased from eight to a squad of 31."

Mr Edwards experienced coaching at international level, with the England Ladies Under 19 side and began coaching the Malvern Angels - the town's women's rugby side - in January, leading the team to the top of their league.

Gary Tolley, of Malvern Rugby Club, said: "Mark was a very good friend and coaching colleague and was well respected in rugby circles.

"He was a great bloke and coaching colleague and I will certainly miss his coaching tips and gems of match-play tactics."
