A SURVEY has revealed that majority of Droitwich residents have backed proposals for a new 21st century lido.

Over the past few weeks, plans for the site have been on display in the town, with questionnaires asking residents for their views.

Wychavon District Council received almost 400 responses, with 70 per cent supporting the concept. Council leader Martin Jennings said: "The first signs show that we are on the right track and I am delighted so many people came out to have their say.

"All these comments will be taken on board as officers go away and continue finalising these plans to create a 21st century lido for everyone to enjoy."

At last night's executive board meeting, members heard how 63 per cent of people were pleased with Wychavon's decision to use saltwater in the heated outdoor pool, which would be graduated to form a shallow beach area.

Just 19 per cent did not support the concept and the rest were unsure.

The plans include two children's wet play areas, with water cannons, palm tree water sprays and jets.

The current indoor pool would be demolished to form additional car parking facilities, to be located next to a caf and reception area.

Of the responses, 41 per cent said that they would use the site at least once a week.

Suggestions for improvements included the introduction of sunbeds, parasols for hire, a diving board and water slide.

Other residents would like to enjoy being pampered, suggesting the introduction of a beauty kiosk and sauna.
