A DEMAND by Labour for a leading district councillor to resign over her failure to answer a question regarding faulty play equipment on two Rubery playing fields has failed.
At a special meeting of the full council called by Labour, all six councillors put their names to a motion calling for Councillor June Griffiths (Con-Alvechurch), the district council's portfolio holder for leisure and tourism, to resign from the cabinet.
Labour claimed earlier this year the council failed to take prompt action to rectify faulty equipment caused by suspected vandalism.
Cllr Griffiths maintained she had answered that complaint and had outlined to members details of a new streamlined procedure that had been put in place regarding carrying out repairs.
However, a similar situation regarding faulty equipment had subsequently arisen and which is at present the subject of an ongoing internal inquiry.
At the meeting, Cllr Griffiths told Bromsgrove councillors she was unable to comment on the latest incident, but assured members a full report into the matter will be made public on November 8.
Speaking in her colleague's defence, Cllr Margaret Taylor (Con-Linthurst), accused Labour of being "irresponsible" by calling a special meeting knowing full well Cllr Griffiths was unable to give members answers because of the inquiry.
Another notice of motion by Labour was referred to the cabinet for discussion.
It urged the council to honour its obligations to provide a play area on Brook Road Recreation Ground and invest the £35,000 allocated to the ground from the sale of the former Callowbrook School site.
