COULD Droitwich hold the secret to a longer life? Could there really be something special about the Spa's brine water supply? Perhaps the lake that lies 200 feet beneath the town holds mystical benefits for us all.
Maybe that is the reason that five residents of the town are currently aged over 100-years-old and still going strong.
Two weeks ago the Advertiser highlighted the fact that town residential home, The Priory, celebrated two 100th birthdays in the space of a week. Firstly wartime volunteer Lillian Cook, who swears by a whisky and lemonade at bedtime, celebrated her big occasion before Sarah Young hit the milestone just seven days later.
That report came only a few months after we featuredformer top radio sports commentator Harry Walker becoming a centenarian at Rashwood Nursing Home on August 6. Harry commented on water sports in London, Rome, Munich and Mexico and covered the Moscow Olympic Games.
Now it has come to light that the same nursing home also has two other residents who have passed 100. Richard Clay turned 100 on April 30 and Elsie Thomas is currently 102.
Hazel Sparks, from Rashwood Nursing Home, added: "It is very rare to have three people all over 100-years-old."
Just a coincidence, or an added benefit of living in Droitwich Spa? Perhaps there is something in the water, perhaps the relaxed atmosphere of the town has played its part over the years, and of course, lets not rule out a drop of whisky before bedtime.
