BUTCHER Craig Saunders is celebrating sizzling success after his sausages won a top honour at an award ceremony.

And it wasn't just his prize pork that won an award at the British Pig Executive's event.

His company, H Dayus, of St John's, Worcester, was recognised in all four of the categories entered and came away with two gold medals and two silver medals.

The sweet smell of success was even more satisfying for Mr Craig as it was the first time the firm had entered a competition in its 45-year history.

He said: "The firm was started by my father-in-law, Henry Dayus, 45 years ago, and entering competitions was never considered.

"He is now retired and I am running it with my wife, Georgina, and my son, Tristan, who is 18 years old.

"We thought we would give the BPEX quality awards a go and were delighted to win an award in all the categories entered.

"It was a particular achievement for Tristan, who won gold in the young sausage maker category for his pork sausage.

"We also had gold with our dry-cure bacon and silver for our pork pies and pork and leek sausages."

The family makes all its produce on site, from pies, sausages and cooked meats to ready meals. They still use many of the traditional recipes created by Mr Dayus nearly half a century ago.

Now they are hoping to continue their winning streak and enter more contests next year.

Mr Saunders added: "We have a taste for it now, as it were."
