SIMON Russell is hoping to live up to his nickname "Scholesy" by adding the Manchester United and former England playmaker's shooting prowess to his game, writes Mat Kendrick.

Russell was given the moniker as a youth teamer at Hull because of his physical resemblance to Paul Scholes and the tag has stayed with him ever since.

But while the sandy-haired Harriers striker laughs at the comparison, he would welcome Scholes' goals.

"I got that at Hull because I used to look a little bit similar to him," said Russell.

"I don't think I look anything like him now but the lads still call it me.

"If I could play like him and score goals like him it would be nice!"

Although Russell was in free-scoring form during the club's pre-season campaign, he has failed to find the net in the Conference despite a string of chances.

And the 20-year-old wing wizard admits he is doing extra shooting practice this season to ensure he reaches his target of double figures.

He said: "I've been really disappointed with my finishing since the season started," said Russell, who only notched twice, in victories at Oxford and at home to Lincoln, last term.

"This year I've got to score more goals, I've got to.

"It hasn't happened up to now, but looking at the positives I'm getting into the right positions to have chances.

"Obviously they're not going in yet, but I'm working on it. I'm looking towards double figures which I think is a realistic target.

"Because I'm not an out-and-out striker I'm not as clinical as I should be because I'm not used to being in scoring situations, but I'm determined to learn and improve."

Widely regarded as the best signing of Jan Molby's ill-fated second spell, the enthusiastic youngster sees the 2005-06 campaign as a big season for himself and Harriers.

"It's been an indifferent start with the results - a win, a draw and a loss - but I think we've been the better side in all three games," said Russell.

"We've just been unfortunate not to pick up maximum points.

"We've got a great set of lads here now and we're definitely capable of doing things."

Russell has been pleasantly surprised at the space and time he has been allowed in the Conference so far and puts his new found freedom down to boss Stuart Watkiss's 4-3-3 system.

He said: "Personally I've found it a little bit easier in the Conference than I did in the League.

"I've found it easier to get on the ball and play. Maybe it's the formation we're playing that gives me more space and time.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed the positions I've been playing on the right and the left and although I like playing behind a front two as well, the position I'm being playing at the moment is great."
