WHEN the emperor of Rome is killed in unusual circumstances, Aruntius, a mad, power-crazed individual succeeds him.
To celebrate, he forces champion gladiator Thrax to fight in the bloodiest gladiatorial event ever staged.
Thrax dies in battle but, in heaven, the gods inform him that they are unhappy with Aruntius' ascension. Thrax's duty is to restore glory to Rome.
Gladiator does not start off as well as one might hope, with a mediocre fight in the coliseum. After Thrax's death, however, the game improves, particularly graphically.
Fighting is fairly easy with two main buttons to execute moves. The gameplay is mediocre but, as gamers complete various challenges, new weapons, magic and various other bonuses can be unlocked.
It's surprising that Gladiator carries a 15 certificate because, although it is very bloody, the brutality is not as apparent as in the likes of Manhunt.
In fact the blood is little more than a multitude of red splashes and the occasional Mortal Kombat style fatality.
Gladiator is alright as a game and may be appreciated by some but it lacks depth.
The puzzles have little variation or challenge and the fighting is repetitive.
The game can be credited with a reasonable storyline but all other aspects are simply average.
