IN a recent Memory Lane feature, I gave nostalgic pictorial reminders of the rows of shops and businesses which once lined Silver Street before their demolition to make way for the City Walls Road.
Since then, Joan Palfrey has been in touch to point out that I did not mention one of the largest businesses of former Silver Street - W and F Bailey Ltd., the builders merchants who were near Stew's Dance Academy. Mrs Palfrey says her late husband, Gordon Palfrey was manager of Baileys for many years before leaving to set up his own business - H.B.P Building Supplies in Lowesmoor. Mrs Palfrey adds that on the opposite side of Silver Street was the store of ironmongers Whitemans, also owned by Baileys.
The help of Memory Lane readers, particularly collectors or experts on antique clocks, is sought by Lennart Larsson who has e-mailed us from his home in Sweden. He has bought an old grandfather clock which is signed "J. Nicholls, Worcester" and is believed to date from 1805. I have looked in old directories of Worcester and can only find, in 1840, a John Nicholls, cabinet maker of 82 High Street and New Street. Can readers supply any firm details about J. Nicholls, maker of the 1805 clock? Please contact Mike Grundy at the Evening News.
