CROSS Keys won an enthralling top-of-the-table clash against Bell Inn 98 on Sunday and crushed the only 100 per cent record in thesoccersite.co.uk Malvern Football League.
Leaders Bell Inn 98 visited Cross Keys and went down 0-2 to their hosts, who replaced them at the top of the table. Cross Keys are now the only unbeaten team in the league.
In a close first-half, both sides had chances but Cross Keys were unlucky not to take the lead when a 30-yard volley from Ed Lyons seemed destined for the top of the net only for Luke Ledbury to pull off a brilliant save. Mike Cole hit a post for Cross Keys before they grabbed a vital goal in the 42nd minute. Cross Keys man-of-the-match Paul Edwards went on a fine individual run from midway in the visitors' half and fired a low shot from the edge of the area into the net through a crowd of players. Cross Keys increased their lead when Ed Lyons ran on to a long ball and lobbed the keeper. Bell Inn 98 kept pressing, with Chris Grubb working hard, but Ashley Jones missed a couple of good opportunities. A good all-round team performance from Cross Keys saw them deservedly take all three points.
Oak Allstars continued their climb up the table when they entertained Morgan Aero 8 and, following a scintillating first-half performance, became the first side to beat them. Oak Allstars rocked Morgan with a four-goal burst in the first 20 minutes and scored twice more before half-time.
The main contributor to this scoreline was Jamie James, who was in sparkling form to notch up four first-half goals, rounding the keeper twice in one-on-one situations and also hitting two superb shots home. The other goals came from Anthony Bradford and James Dean. Oak Allstars then had the misfortune to first lose keeper Andrew Lancett with a rib injury and then substitute keeper Andy McTear sustained a broken nose, which led to defender Adi Jones donning the gloves.
In a tighter second-half, Morgan Aero 8 gave a much better performance forcing some excellent saves from keeper Jones.
There was a surprise scoreline at Fromes Hill where visitors Dynamo Ledbury were expecting to pick up the points. Following a good contest, where they were kept out by a series of superb saves from home keeper Paul Stubbs, they were somewhat lucky to share the points when two free-kicks from Fromes' Shaun Taylor struck the woodwork in the second-half. The game ended 0-0, which was the second consecutive goalless draw for Fromes Hill, something that has not happened in the league for many years.
Ganglands, who were without top scorer Wayne Cadmore, who is away until December on army manoeuvres, entertained Keyz 04 and gained ample revenge for their 3-6 defeat earlier this month. Gordon Mansell gave Ganglands the lead in the fourth minute when he headed home a long kick downfield. Ganglands were awarded a penalty in the eighth minute but Gordon Mansell saw his well-struck kick hit the foot of the post and rebound to safety. Mansell set up Tom Bethell to slot the ball home to make it 2-0. Bethell then returned the favour with a pin-point cross which Gordon Mansell headed home to cap a fine performance. When Keyz 04 did press, they found keeper Dean Watson in fine form.
Talbot Head visited Keys Victoria and gained a comfortable 6-0 victory with goals from Adam Webb, Graham Martin, Tom Hofton, Luke Stallard and two from David Schooling.
In the remaining league game, Ledbury Rangers beat Fromes Hill 5-1 with goals from Jamie Phillips, Gary Watkins and a hat-trick from Adi Barnes with the visitors response coming from Lee Card.
Leading goalscorers (up to and including October 23 in league and league cup games only): 12 - James Dean (Oak Allstars), Wayne Cadmore (Ganglands); 9 - Nathan Dixon (Dynamo Ledbury), Chris Grubb (Bell Inn 98); 8 - Gordon Mansell (Ganglands), Mark Taylor (Cross Keys).
An interesting statistic is that Cross Keys goals have been shared between 14 players, with normal keeper Craig Humphries finding the net seven times so far.
