THE Villagers entertained Prinner Sports, who had beaten them 2-0 only a few weeks previous in a league fixture.

VILLAGERS 1, PRINNER SPORTS RESERVES 1

(aet - Villagers won on pens)

The Villagers started brightly with Roly Green and Phil Wild threatening every time they were on the ball and lone striker Neil Morgan also doing a great job.

Tom Smith and Paul Thomas were solid at the back and never looked like giving away anything cheaply. Phil Dyde also grabbed the attention as every ball close to him was won with the spirit and determination that eventually won the Villagers the game.

Missing John Tilley from the middle of the park was always going to be a big loss to team morale but with Nathan Wanklin winning most things in the air and Paul Knivett trying to create something from midfield, the Villagers seemed confident when going forward.

After half-time, the Villagers looked to get the winning goal but unfortunately, Prinner got reward for a short period of pressure with a goal themselves.

It was up to the Villagers to respond and after a long free-kick from Tom Smith, Nathan Wanklin flicked on to Neil Morgan, he found Phil Wild to create the easiest of headers from close range to equalise.

In extra time, the Villagers pressed for the winner but chance after chance came for both sides, making some great end-to-end play.

On 118 minutes, Roly Green flashed a shot wide of the target. Neil Morgan had also put a free- kick higher than he would have liked as penalties loomed.

All down to penalties after what had been an exhausting first cup game, it was Jamie Plant who pulled off three great saves to secure the second round draw and more than redeem himself for his earlier error.

Men-of-the-match were Phil Dyde and Paul Thomas.

On Sunday, the Villagers are at home in the league against Saracen Rangers.
