I moved to the hills around 10 years ago and, to my knowledge, Priory Park has never been used for an evening concert, especially Celtic (death metal) Rock.
However, at the end of May this year, and with the support of local police and council officials, I "opened up" such possibilities with the Brazilian band Ashtar. As creator and director of Floating Lotus, which staged the event, I am happy that others, such as TGs and the Fringe, want to carry forward the concept.
Malvern folk are quick to pick up the local paper and certainly enjoy extended discussions in the letters' pages. However, the essential raw material for this is the proactive generation of something. Recent examples, such as the West Malvern Festival and Bands in the Park, show the potential for musical gatherings around the hills. A lively and positive community will encourage such events and support the people, the energy and the venues needed to achieve them.
There would have been no excitement in the letters' pages over the mothballing of the Con Club had Malachi (the owner) not encouraged the likes of Floating Lotus, Foundation, Phoenix, and the Magic Bow Show to utilise this location for the years prior to its closure.
There are will always be many "issues" surrounding musical gatherings in the town and these need consistent attention. However, should we allow these issues to become the focus, then we will inevitably loose the venues.
The focus should be on what might be possible in the future and to consider carefully how and with whom this may be achieved.
