MALVERN Men's hockey team won their first ever league game on Saturday when they entertained Atherstone Adders.

MALVERN 1, ATHERSTONE ADDERS 0

In their latest Coaching Solutions League West Midlands division four fixture, and with the majority of their first team available, Malvern took the game to Atherstone from the start.

The midfield quartet of Ben Mawby, Tristan Price, John Podmore and Joe Smith worked tirelessly to control the game, and with the aid of the defensive line of Chris Hepinstall, Dave Barnes, Rich Peate and Shaun Kibani, held the Atherstone forwards at bay.

An injury to Joe Smith brought Richard Simmonds into the fray and he immediately pressurised the visiting defence with some intelligent runs.

As the game went on, Atherstone became increasingly frustrated with the skill and perseverance of the Malvern defence, who broke down most attacks with ease.

With two minutes to go, Shaun Kibani went on a determined run from one end of the pitch to the other, beating many players on the way, before unleashing a pinpoint cross for Richard Simmonds to score his second goal of the season from close range.

Malvern played out the rest of the match in control and kept hold of the ball, much to the frustration of Atherstone.

A special mention goes to James Van Rossum, who came on at half-time and impressed greatly, but man-of-the-match was Shaun Kibani, for a fantastic display of sheer determination and defensive skill.

Malvern look to build on this display tomorrow (Saturday), when they are away to Barlaston.

Malvern have had some new players join recently, but more are required. If interested, contact Brian Crump on 07709800039 or turn up at training at The Chase on Wednesday evenings at 8-9pm.
