REVENGE will be very sweet, Elizabethan-style, in Malvern Theatre Players' next production.

The poisonings, murders and plotting of the Revenger's Tragedy will be staged in a recreated Elizabethan playhouse from Wednesday to Saturday, November 9-12.

Vindice (Chris Gunter) is seeking revenge for the untimely death of his fiance at the hands of a corrupt duke (Andrew Howie). When his plans go wrong, more plots and revenges follow.

Former group member and 16th and 17th Century theatre expert, Amelia Marriette has adapted and edited Thomas Middleton's rarely performed play.

Director and designer Chris Bassett described it as sexy, daring and funny.

"It's a rare chance to see a play filled with delicious poisonings, murders and sycophancy that even our politicians would sneer at," he said.

Audiences will see the Forum Theatre transformed into an early 17th Century Globe theatre, designed by Jackie Norton and painted by Kate Standen.

During the two hour production, there will be no interval but, as in the 17th Century, audiences will be able leave the auditorium and return at any time.

In keeping with Elizabethan custom, the auditorium will contain side stage seating, there will be no changes of stage lighting and only sound effects will be used.

Period costumes and music from a small ensemble, directed by John Frith, will add to the atmosphere.

"The aim is to provide an unapologetic and faithful period rendering of the play," said Mr Bassett.

Tickets for the Revenger's Tragedy, priced £9, are available from 01684 892277.
