A WORRIED mother of seven-year-old twins fears a child could be killed if nothing is done to slow down speeding motorists in her narrow terraced street.

Nurse, Jackie Morgan, is launching a petition calling for a 20mph speed limit to be imposed in Park Street - just a year after speed bumps were installed.

"I have lived here for 20 years and there is a lot more speed and noise," she said, "They accelerate between the bumps and then brake hard to go over them."

She added: "It's a very narrow street, with parked cars on either side. Some children play out at the front and if they dashed out into the road a motorist wouldn't see them in time.

"At least if they were going at 20mph the child would be injured and not killed."

Mrs Morgan added that many residents' cars had had wing mirrors damaged by passing motorists - one neighbour had four wing mirrors smashed - by motorists using the street as a rat run.

She planned to hand her petition to local district councillor, Marcus Hart, who said that 20mph speed limits were usually reserved for outside schools but he would support such a proposal - if that was the wish of the residents - and liaise with the Highways Partnership.
