MORE than four decades after first hitting the charts with The Jam, Paul Weller is still churning out the tunes. His style has changed over the years but he still carries a clout as this latest offering shows.
The sleeve notes say this album is dedicated to Worcestershire's own Jim Capaldi - a musicians' musician who died at the start of the year. And it is a fitting tribute as Weller has succeeded in creating a timeless work with the songs highlighting the many phases through which the former Mod leader has gone through.
Come On/Let's Go could have come straight from a session with The Jam while Bring Back the Funk attempts to do just that.
But Weller is at his best in the more soulful numbers.
The acoustic All on a Misty Morning has a wonderfully raw feel while Roll Along Summer has a touch of the melancholic Nick Drake about it.
Weller's musicianship is a delight as he proves to be a master of both piano and guitar.
There are a few dud tracks but they are easily overlooked when the rest are so good.
