DYSLEXIA sufferers will now find it easier to read and write thanks to a piece of computer software developed by a Worcester firm.
Dolphin Tutor, designed by Dolphin Computer Access, of Blackpole Estate West, allows the computer to read back what is being put on a PC screen. And as the words are read aloud, the corresponding text is highlighted, forming a visible link between the written word and the spoken word.
A prediction dictionary is also available for people who have problems spelling.
The system also enables users to save all of the on-screen text as an audio file, to play it back on a computer or portable audio player later, or even e-mail, to colleagues and teachers.
It is compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet Explorer.
Steve Palmer, Dolphin boss, said: "Dyslexia is now recognised as a physical condition, one shared by many of the greatest figures in history, including Albert Einstein, Muhammad Ali, Leonardo da Vinci and even Sir Winston Churchill.
"We believe this package offers new hope to all school children affected by dyslexia and other learning difficulties."
Dolphin is a firm dedicated solely to the development of computer software to assist people with visual impairments and reading.
Established in 1986, the group has a multi-million pound turnover, employs more than 60 people worldwide, and exports its software to more than 30 countries throughout the world.
For the past 20 years Dolphin products have enabled people with visual impairments and reading difficulties to enjoy the same level of independence as their peers, whether at home, at school or at work.
Mr Palmer added: "Only four per cent of affected people know that solutions are available to their problems.
"At Dolphin we aim to improve educational standards for all children, enhancing their self esteem and providing them with a better chance of future success. Dolphin Tutor offers a real solution for children and adults alike, to help them to read and write."
Clive Corbett, head teacher at Pershore High School, welcomed the innovation.
He said: "This sounds like something we could certainly do with at the school.
"We have a very strong learning support department and I would be interested to see this to see if it would give us another weapon in our armoury."
