SIR - James Roberts and the Green Party are completely wrong in claiming the King Street car park feasibility study has anything at all to do with increasing Worcester's car parking capacity. On the contrary, this is about re-balancing our city's parking. Any spaces created on King Street would mean closing spaces elsewhere.
If we are serious about promoting tourism in Worcester we need to improve the riverside and have parking near our leading tourist attractions. This could well mean closing part or all of Copenhagen Street car park to enhance that area and achieve a riverside of which we can all be proud. We will still need the car parking space elsewhere, otherwise a rise in council tax and/or cuts in services would be the result.
We are talking only about a low-decked car park of appropriate design. The Dean of Worcester has publicly said it would be a good thing. Attempts by Michael Foster MP and the Green Party to suggest that this is about increasing car parking are misleading. It is not as if they haven't been corrected on several occasions. Since they continue to repeat incorrect information, we must conclude that they are doing it deliberately. They are not acting in the interest of our city.
F D LANKESTER,
Worcester.
