YOUNG people living in rural areas are set to benefit from a £50,000 council injection to help them get back home from nightclubs and parties safely.

Wychavon's rural transport scrutiny team have come up with a pilot dial-a-ride taxi service which is set to be approved at the executive board's meeting on Tuesday, November 1.

Members canvassed pupils at high schools in the district before they came up with the idea of providing a taxi service between Pershore and Worcester on Friday and Saturday nights.

They are also planning to provide a second service from Ashchurch railway station for residents living in the Bredon area.

It is all part of Wychavon District Council's endeavour to improve access to transport for residents living in rural areas where buses do not run.

Leader of the team Councillor Mike Barratt said: "We were asked to come up with ideas with an outline budget of £50,000.

"We have worked hard to identity the areas where there is most need for schemes such as the dial-a-ride."

He explained that the cost would be subsidised from council funds and would enable young people to get back from Worcester safely, as late as 2am.

The scheme from Ashchurch railway station in Tewkesbury will enable residents of all ages to get to and from the train station anytime during the day.

Cllr Barratt said: "The pilot is expected to be approved at the executive board meeting, and full details of how the scheme can be accessed will be published after that."
